Steep Holm Island

This is a view of Steep Holm Island located in the Bristol Channel is part of North Somerset, England.  I took this picture while standing on a hilltop from the Poet's Walk in Clevedon. The island is formed of Carboniferous Limestone.  According to legend, first recorded by John Leland in the 16th century, Saint Gildas, the author of De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae  (Latin for "On the Ruin and Conquest of Britain"), lived on Steep Holm during the 6th century.  He arrived on Steep Holm after visiting his friend Saint Cadoc, who lived on Flat Holm (neighboring island) as a hermit.
