D.A.R.E. Graduation

Today was a busy day. My sister was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday after having surgery on Friday. I've been busy looking after her and making sure she is settled in and has all the things she needs to recuperate. Today I took her out on some errands that she needed to get done and got it all taken care of. She is doing very well and is a real trooper, esp. since she had to carry her wound vac. with her everywhere she goes! She had surgery on her leg; they took out a 4x5 inch section of skin on her leg that is about an inch deep! They have this wound vacuum machine attached to her via a tube that collects and drains the fluid build up in the wound and it is attached to her at all time. She amazes me how strong she is handling it all and the Dr.'s said it will take at least a month to recover. Tomorrow I will pick up some groceries for her.

So, after the running around today we had my oldest son's D.A.R.E. Graduation tonight! The kids at his school (6th Grade) participated in a 14 week long program called Drug Abuse Resistance Education (aka D.A.R.E.). The kids worked hard at it and learned so much. Well, tonight was their Graduation and they had a lovely ceremony honoring them. It included all the 6th Grades in the district, the Mayor, State Representatives, the Chief of Police, the various Principles and teachers, Board of Education members, and their D.A.R.E. Patrol Officers. They even had the Color Guard bring the flags out (playing bagpipes-love that!) and a Choir sang the National Anthem...it was really lovely! They called each child to walk across the stage to accept their award and shake their hands. Three kids got to read their essays that they wrote about saying "No" to drugs and I was quite impressed by them. :-) I am very proud of my young man and thankful that their school offers such important programs like that to them.
